Notre Dame has been an independent football program since it started playing football, but it has always aligned itself with the ACC, seemingly almost playing an entire ACC schedule. However, there is always the conversation, it seems like every year, about how the Fighting Irish aren't in a conference, and it is unfair, but normally, that's the talking heads saying that.
Now, we have Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire being added to the list of programs that are jealous of Notre Dame being an independent program. In his post-game press conference on Saturday, McGuire fired shots at Notre Dame for not being in a conference and seemingly praising BYU for being in the Big 12.
McGuire wasn't actually bold enough to name the Fighting Irish while he was speaking, but he definitely made it obvious he was talking about Marcus Freeman's squad.
"I was really excited whenever they [BYU] joined the Big 12 because I think that they carry a lot of weight and a lot of respect," McGuire said. "I think that I have a lot of respect for them entering a conference and not playing an independent schedule like other people. Y'all already know who that is."
At that point, McGuire should have just named Notre Dame and at least had the confidence to call them out instead of hiding behind it. Of course, with something like this, Fighting Irish fans are reasonably angry, and they are letting McGuire have it on social media.
Notre Dame fans are speaking their mind about Joey McGuire's shot at Notre Dame
We live in a world in which Joey McGuire, the head coach at Texas Tech, a program with 3 double-digit win seasons since 1970, is taking shots at Notre Dame, a program with 20.

Sticking to 2025 — TTU’s strength of schedule is No. 68 per the Sagarin Ratings. ND’s is No. 22. pic.twitter.com/57JxU7YaMG
Notre Dame has had a lot more success than Texas Tech has over the year, and just like the post above says, let's look at the strength of schedule for the Red Raiders and the Fighting Irish. Unless Texas Tech had a tough strength of schedule, maybe McGuire should just keep his thoughts to himself.

Short, sweet, and to the point.

Honestly, it is like flexing with no muscles. Of course, Texas Tech is looking good this season, but come and play Notre Dame's schedule and see how you fare.
Can you imagine if in the middle of a press conference Marcus Freeman started whining, totally unprompted, about Texas Tech?

What a whiney, loser look from Joey McGuire. Maybe he should note what happened to James Franklin when he whined so much about it.
It really ends up not being a good look for McGuire at this point. Making comments like this is exactly what gives teams bulletin board material, and if Notre Dame and Texas Tech meet in the College Football Playoff, then the Red Raiders better watch out. Should have just left it on the field, McGuire.
