While the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team is hoping to get some guys ready to go against the Miami Hurricanes in two weeks, safety Luke Talich is busy working his way back for Navy. Of course, he’s not quite back yet, as he’s still dealing with a broken hand.
The safety spoke to the media after practice this week about how close he was to returning and getting the cast off his hand.
For now, Luke Talich still had a thick cast on his injured left wrist after Tuesday's practice: "I’m trying to get rid of it tomorrow if they’ll let me. I think I’ve got one more week with it and I should have it off next week. I’m getting near the end of it. I’ve gotten pretty used to it by now."
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish would love to see Talich get that cast off and be 100% when they face off against the Hurricanes in two weeks.
Mike Brown talks wide receiver rotation for Notre Dame
On Tuesday, wide receivers coach Mike Brown said he and the other Notre Dame assistants were looking at ways to improve the rotation, but it’s also hard to move away from the players the Irish coaches trust to get the job done.
"It's all about consistency," Brown explained. "And the guys have done a good job. I know there's a lot of questions about rotations and it's not that anybody's doing anything wrong. I do have trust in our guys. I think our guys have continually gotten better. We've had, since I've been here over these past three years, Jordan Faison and Jaden Greathouse. They've been two of the better players on our offense. Sometimes when you get into those situations, it's those big moments in those big games.”
Mario Cristobal doesn’t want to talk about Notre Dame yet
It’s easy for coaches to look past an opponent when a big game like Notre Dame vs. Miami is two weeks away. Earlier this week, a reporter asked Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal if he was tempted to look past the North Carolina Tar Heels. He was having none of it.
"No, I'm making sure that they don’t look ahead to Notre Dame," he said. "Yes. No, making sure that that's not a trap game type. Okay. You can see I'm armed and ready to So, I'm sorry. What was your question?"
After apologizing for the interruption, Cristobal let the reporter finish the question about North Carolina, then addressed the importance of this week's message.
Next week, he’ll almost certainly be ready to talk about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and how he’s preparing for the season's biggest game.
