The biggest and best news of Sunday for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish is that one of its best linebackers could very well be ready for Week 1. Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa said after the team's latest practice that he is full contact and is no longer wearing a knee brace. Considering that's just nine months after he tore his ACL, it turns out that KVA isn't just a great defender; he's a physical freak of nature who will instantly elevate one of the best defenses in the country to something even scarier.
More Notre Dame Fighting Irish and national news
- The Notre Dame women's soccer team is not off to a great start this season. After playing to a draw in their first game of the season, they also drew (2-2) against heavy underdog Penn State. Certainly, a draw is better than a loss for the No. 2 team in the country, but the Irish would admit they should absolutely be 2-0 so far this season.
- The AP preseason poll is officially released later on Monday morning, and almost everyone knows that the Fighting Irish will be included. Most believe they'll be included in the Top 5. What might be more interesting is how many opponents are in the preseason poll, considering how many analysts believe that Marcus Freeman's squad has a cupcake slate. If Miami, BYU, and SMU are all in the first official Top 25 of the season, it would undercut those arguments at least a little bit.
- Notre Dame is very clearly living rent-free in CFB analyst Danny Kannell's head. Kanell recently tried to pile on comments made by Indiana coach Curt Cignetti about scheduling a series against Notre Dame. Cignetti said the Hoosiers should get two home games and ND should get one since they're not in a conference.
- Kanell jumped on board the bandwagon this weekend when he said, "We need more people to call out Notre Dame and their sweetheart deal as an independent." Kanell, of course, is a former Florida State quarterback who routinely says silly things, and this is definitely one of them.
- LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has officially gone on the record saying that the NCAA should allow players that were part of the 2022 class to come back and play one more season. Right now, those players are not grandfathered in under the new 5-for-5 eligibility ruling.
- “Obviously, not a very clean system right now of how that is,” Kiffin said. “We just try to prepare. If it’s ruled that way and these guys can play and they can go everywhere, which I would think you have to. If someone’s going to rule that they’re eligible to play, and they get the year back, the 2022s, in fairness to them, how could you possibly limit them?
- Florida State is the latest program to announce it will have jersey patches this season. Quite a few schools have announced this method for a little extra income this season and beyond. The Seminoles basketball program announced a jersey patch partnership with ReliaQuest. Late last month, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish announced their own deal, which remains the biggest current deal in college sports.
