The Notre Dame Fighting Irish had a good weekend and look for a great week.

As the Notre Dame Fighting Irish gear up to see where they'll be in the first College Football Playoffs rankings, Micah Shrewsberry and his squad are starting their season on Monday night.

It's a new look Irish squad that will still lean heavily on budding superstar Markus Burton to lead the way when it comes to scoring. However, he could have a little more help from guys like Northern Arizona transfer Carson Towt, who led the nation with 12.4 rebounds per game last season.

Sir Mohammed, the return of Braeden Shrewsberry, Cole Serta, and others has the Notre Dame Fighting Irish hoping they can make some serious noise in the always tough ACC. They'll start the season at 7 p.m. on Monday against a Long Island University team that finished second in the NEC last season.

Hockey suffers sweep at the hands of Michigan

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team hasn't exactly gotten off to a strong start to the season. Now sitting at 3-4-1, they suffered a pair of losses to hated rival Michigan on Thursday and Friday.

The Irish lost the first game 5-3 and then dropped the second game in the two-game series, 2-1 in overtime. The schedule doesn't get any easier as they'll face off against Minnesota this week and then Michigan State following the Golden Gophers.

  • The Irish women's basketball team also opens its season this week, though fans will have to wait a bit to see Hannah Hidalgo and company as they won't play until Wednesday night against FDU.
  • While some were worried Notre Dame might suffer from an ugly game against Boston College, they did not. The Irish are now in the Top 10 in both the AP and coaches poll. On Tuesday, the first College Football Playoffs rankings will be released but it appears they're in, just barely for now.
  • Jeremiyah Love set a new school record on Saturday when he logged his second touchdown run of more than 90 yards against the Boston College Golden Eagles. He galloped 94 yards for the insurance score.
  • Mark Zackery announced his presence with authority on Saturday as he had his best game as a Notre Dame Fighting Irish cornerback. He shut down BC's offense and kept them from throwing at him at all. In 79 snaps, he allowed just one catch for four yards.
