With just a few weeks until the Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball program tips off its season, head coach Micah Shrewsberry unveiled this year's projected starting lineup. Obviously, the most striking part of the lineup was the absence of Marcus Burton, who had been one of the best players to come through South Bend in quite some time before transferring to Indiana.
- The Fighting Irish projected starters include fifth-year point guard Braeden Smith, senior shooting guard Braeden Shrewsberry, fifth-year player Ethan Roberts at the wing position, sophomore power forward Brady Koehler, and fifth-year center Logan Duncomb.
- Notre Dame has a veteran group this year that Shrewsberry obviously hopes will lead to more wins. The problem is that he's essentially starting over in Year 4.
- Braden Shrewsberry has the most experience in the Irish's starting lineup. Last season, Braeden averaged 11.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 32.7 minutes per game in South Bend. Duncomb previously played for Indiana and Winthrop. In the 2025-26 campaign with the Eagles, the big man averaged 18.3 points and 8.9 rebounds a game. Roberts, a transfer from Penn, averaged 16.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game for the Quakers last season. Notre Dame will have an exhibition game at Dayton on Saturday at 7 p.m.
More Notre Dame Fighting Irish news
- The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team lost its first game of the year on Friday night. The Golden Domers were handed defeat by No. 6 Western Michigan. The Irish were thoroughly thrashed by the Broncos, losing 6-1 and will try to get revenge on Saturday night.
- Earlier this week, BYU linebacker Jake Clifton might have given the Irish a little bit of bulletin board material when he talked about how to stop CJ Carr:
- “Yeah, just get that guy uncomfortable,” Clifton said about Carr. “He has some studs in front of him at O-line. These guys are bigger than what we've seen, right? These guys have played in some top-10 matchups in their time. Get this guy off the spot, make him uncomfortable and give him a little elbow every now and then. Make sure that he knows that you're going to be there all game.”
- Jason Onye is expected back for the game against No. 8 BYU tonight, though head coach Marcus Freeman said he'll be eased back in after missing all but the first half of this year's season opener.
- “The first thing is we’ve got to get him out here to practice and see how he moves around,” Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator said. “If they clear him, we’ll just see how many reps he can get. A lot of it’s going to be just conditioning and fundamentals. Conditioning will be a factor. Fundamentals, because he hasn’t been able to do a lot of them for a while.”
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish Defensive back Leonard Moore is also expected to return on Saturday, though like Onye, it's not clear how much he'll play, as he's missed the last few weeks with a concussion. The good news is that if he shows he's ready, he could play the whole game.
