The Notre Dame Fighting Irish didn’t play in Week 0, so they got to sit back and watch a couple of opponents start their campaigns and prepare for later in the season. North Carolina and Stanford both began their campaigns, and both teams won in very different fashion.
The Tar Heels were engaged in a bit of a rock fight with TCU in Dublin. After a 10-10 tie as the first quarter came to a close, neither UNC nor the Horned Frogs managed much in the way of offense afterward. In fact, Bill Belichick’s team might have won 15-10, but they managed just three points after the first quarter.
The Stanford Cardinal, on the other hand, managed plenty of offense. The ACC squad faced Hawaii for the second time in two years, and both games were very entertaining. On Saturday night, Stanford gave new head coach Tavita Pritchard a 37-27 win.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish continue preparing for the regular season
When Marcus Freeman and Co. start their season next Sunday against Wisconsin, they’ll have four captains chosen. Two, Adon Shuler and Drayk Bowen, are second-time captains. They are the 28th and 29th two-time captains in the program’s history. Junior CJ Carr and senior Jordan Faison are the other two captains.
Quarterback commit Champ Monds had himself a very good Friday night. 21-of-26 for 380 yards and carried six times for 44 yards. Among the highlights of the night, Monds threw a 92-yard touchdown pass to go along with two more throws into the end zone. He also had a couple of goal-line runs into the end zone that helped his Vero Beach team improve to 2-0 on the season. In the process, he continues to impress onlookers and could streak up the recruiting rankings.
Safety Joey O’Brien spent the better part of the spring and summer worrying Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans that he would miss at least some of the season because of an injury during the Blue and Gold game. People were even more nervous when he sent a picture of himself in the hospital. However, now he’s healthy, and he’s back, and it looks like he might be pushing his way into the rotation early in the season.
