Notre Dame walk-on quarterback Anthony Rezac wasted little time charting the next chapter of his career. When the transfer portal officially opened Friday, Rezac quickly secured his next destination, announcing his commitment to FCS power South Dakota State later that same day.

Rezac spent two seasons in South Bend but never appeared in a game. While opportunities on the field were limited, his departure marks a fresh start at a program known for consistent success and quarterback development at the FCS level.

Limited opportunities at Notre Dame

The 6-foot-3, 201-pound quarterback’s clearest path to seeing the field came through a competition to serve as the holder on Notre Dame’s placekicking unit. That role ultimately went to fifth-year quarterback Tyler Buchner ahead of the 2025 season, leaving Rezac without a game appearance during his Irish tenure.

Despite not seeing action, Rezac remained a developmental presence in the quarterback room, continuing to build behind the scenes while contributing in practice.

Strong pedigree and High School resume

Rezac arrived at Notre Dame with an impressive résumé. A product of Omaha (Neb.) Westside High School, he was named the 2024 Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year after a standout senior season.

His recruitment reflected both athletic ability and academic appeal. Rezac announced eight scholarship offers, including from Air Force, Army and Navy, as well as Ivy League programs Colgate, Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale. He also held an offer from South Dakota before joining Notre Dame as a preferred walk-on.

Family ties remain in South Bend

Rezac is the twin brother of Notre Dame sophomore linebacker Teddy Rezac, who has carved out a steady role on special teams. Teddy has appeared in 20 games over the past two seasons, recording five tackles, and is expected to remain part of the Irish roster heading into the 2026 season.

Fresh opportunity at South Dakota State

According to the latest 2026 On3 transfer portal rankings, Rezac entered the portal listed as the No. 142 quarterback available. At South Dakota State, he’ll join one of the most stable programs in the FCS, giving him a legitimate opportunity to compete, develop, and potentially earn meaningful snaps in a winning environment.
