Despite a loaded Notre Dame football defensive back room, Jayden Sanders stood out this spring. He stood out even more during Saturday's Blue-Gold game. Given a chance to shine due to Leonard Moore's scratch from the final scrimmage, defensive coordinator Chris Ash sang Sanders' praises when he met with the media afterward.
"Well, let's talk about today. Leonard didn't go today. That was a late injury deal. But Jayden's done a great job for us all spring. We've had him at Nickel a lot. He's never played nickel. We needed him at nickel, so most of his snaps here this spring were at Nickel. Today, before kickoff, we had to make an adjustment.
Jayden Sanders gives Notre Dame football another versatile defensive back option
Moore's injury doesn't appear to be something Notre Dame coaches are nervous about, so the focus continued to be on Jayden Sanders and his play in the Blue-Gold game. Ash went on to say that while the former Michigan transfer showed out with his physical talent, he also showed the kind of mental toughness that comes at a premium.
"We put him out at corner and he went out there and did a great job. And it just speaks to him as a person and what he's done here in such a short amount of time to learn multiple positions," Ash added. "And whatever we ask him to do, he's going to try to go do it. And he's done a great job, really happy he's here."
Notre Dame football secondary looks even deeper after Blue-Gold Game showing
Sanders recorded just two tackles, but he also showed off his coverage ability. The defensive back recorded a team-high two pass breakups.
Before coming to Notre Dame, Sanders showed some serious promise. In 2025 with the Wolverines, he appeared in 13 games and tallied 23 total tackles, 16 solo tackles, and one pass defended. He's got the kind of speed that Ash loves to see in his corners, and that is even more of an asset as a Nickel.
The Notre Dame football team already has plenty of talent in its backfield. If Jayden Sanders can continue impressing the coaches this summer and fall, he might have a bigger role when the 2026 season kicks off.
