Former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly is going to learn the hard way very soon that he’s not exactly a well-respected name among the general college football fan. Between his weird Cajun accent when he first took the LSU job and his bad jokes at halftime and after games that sometimes didn’t feel like jokes, he’s not exactly shown himself to be a really charismatic person. Despite all of that, he’s making the jump to the broadcast booth, and in anticipation of that, he recently put out a short video where he talked about why he believes the Texas Longhorns are the team to beat for the national title in 2026.
It took no time at all after Kelly put up the video for a wave of people to make fun of him on social media. The ex-Notre Dame coach, who left South Bend for LSU and was fired in less than five years, will need to have a thick skin quickly if the reactions on Twitter were any indication of how well “liked” he is on the internet.
“Texas is officially eliminated from national championship contention,” wrote one user, clearly making fun of Brian Kelly’s pick right off the boat.

Former Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly roasted over Texas national title pick
It wasn’t just random fans who went out of their way to make sure and make fun of the ex-Irish coach. CBS Analyst Brad Powers went on Twitter to say that he was now definitely taking the “under” on Texas’ 9.5 wins this upcoming season.

The idea that Kelly had just made sure the Longhorns were not winning the title now that the former LSU coach made the call for Arch Manning and Co.

It wasn’t just people that don’t like Texas who were commenting on Kelly’s pick. There were plenty of people who are actual Longhorns fans who were more than a little unnerved that Steve Sarkisian’s squad got so much support from someone who is just not seen as an authority on very much of anything in the college football world.
Oh no, Brian Kelly? We are toast. https://t.co/MhbJQjBr0m

It wasn’t just that Kelly is wrong to some people. There were plenty of fans who felt as though he was actively jinxing the SEC school by making them his pick to win the whole thing.
The final parting shot at Kelly was from those who wondered just what he knew about winning the SEC. That was a decent enough question, considering that he didn’t know about winning in the conference to avoid getting fired.
Should we trust this pick?

What does Brian Kelly know about winning in the SEC? https://t.co/76ubDsGhRL
For the former Notre Dame football coach, he’s clearly trying to fix his reputation and hopes not to be someone fans will actively root against if he’s not on an opposing sideline. The problem is that Kelly is one of those guys who already has quite the reputation. It’s more likely that people will dislike him in the broadcast booth because of what he did when he was coaching. It doesn’t seem like the old Tiger coach can escape his rep, no matter what he does.
