Former Notre Dame wide receiver Chase Claypool had a shot at an NFL comeback but it looks like he'll need to keep searching to make it back onto the field.

Claypool spent the last couple of days as a non-roster invitee to a rookie minicamp with the Green Bay Packers. While head coach Matt Lafeur liked what the big-bodied player brought to the table, it appears he didn't show enough to get signed to a contract.

Chase Claypool’s latest NFL tryout ends without a contract offer

"You guys saw him, right?” LaFleur said about the former Notre Dame star after practice on Friday. “Certainly, he had great film out there. He’s been productive, and he looks like he’s in great shape. He’s big. So, we’ll see how it goes."

Unfortunately for Claypool, things apparently didn't go all that well. According to Sports Illustrated, the Packers declined to give him a longer invite or give him a deal that could keep him into fall camp.

“For the majority of these guys, that’s the purpose behind this," LaFleur added. "We’re not doing any full-speed reps, whether it was drill work in our 11-on-11, the team setting, it was all jog-through. But for some of these guys, the tryout guys, yeah, we take them through the same stuff as everybody else, but then we had a workout after that."

The former Notre Dame star was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft and looked like a future star when he caught 62 passes for 873 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie. He had a solid second season, as well, with 59 catches for 860 yards and two touchdowns.

Chase Claypool still searching for NFL stability after Notre Dame football success

However, he was traded at the 2022 deadline and never found his footing with the Chicago Bears. In 2023, he played 12 games – three with Chicago and nine with Miami – and caught eight passes for 77 yards. He's had chances with the San Francisco 49ers and the Buffalo Bills but wasn't able to grab a roster spot.

Now the former Notre Dame football star is looking for yet another chance with another NFL team. It seems likely that some other franchise will at least give him a look. Though it's a mystery for now why the Packers weren't more interested in Chase Claypoolafter his workouts.
