Texas fans would have 'welcomed' Notre Dame DC Chris Ash back, says insider

It’s hard to know what to make of new Notre Dame football defensive coordinator Chris Ash at the moment, but it’s clear that people who worked with him and rooted for the teams he was on, respected him if they didn’t love him.

Earlier this month, a former Ohio State player talked about the fact that Ash was always kind of an “a-hole” but was someone who made his players better. Today, On3 talked to a Texas beat writer to get their opinion about the defensive coordinator, even if he only spent one season with the Longhorns.

Joe Cook of Inside Texas talked to Blue and Gold’s Tyler Horka about whether or not Texas fans parted ways with the new Notre Dame football defensive coordinator and Cook was clear in saying that while he didn’t know him all that well, he believes that if Ash were to try and come back to coach in Austin, that fans “would have welcomed him back.”

Notre Dame football defensive coordinator respected wherever he went

It’s hardly a scientific approach but generally, you can get a decent idea of how good or bad a coach was by the reactions of the fans of the teams he used to work at. If the fans are happy to see a coach leave, he generally had a rocky time at best there.

On the other hand, if the fans are at least willing to welcome him back, it’s about as glowing a review as you’re going to see.

Until Chris Ash addresses the media and starts coaching the Notre Dame football team, Irish fans don’t have much to go on beyond what his units did under his tutelage and what the people who watched him the closest think about him. Luckily, it won’t be too long now before there’s a bigger body of evidence in South Bend.
