Notre Dame’s QB room praise from CBS Sports comes with one obvious concern

The hype for CJ Carr has hit a fever pitch over the last few weeks. As the season draws ever closer, the Notre Dame quarterback is getting all kinds of praise. However, the latest piece that praised Carr also praised his team’s quarterback room. In fact, it finds the unit one of the best in the country, though there is a twist.

CBS Sports analyst Blake Brockermeyer recently wrote College football's top 10 QB rooms, and while the Irish do make the list, they are dead last. While being No. 10 in the country still gets on the very impressive list, it also underscores that if something were to happen to Carr, the Golden Domers might be in trouble. That trouble wouldn’t be because ND is low on talent at quarterback, but his backups are completely untested freshmen.

CJ Carr made a major jump last season after a difficult two-game start to his career against Miami and Texas A&M,” Brockermeyer wrote about the Notre Dame star.

“Carr looks like a future NFL starter. He showed the ability to hit all areas of the field and threw only six interceptions all season. Now he will have a tough decision to make after the year: return for another season or leave for the NFL.”

Blake Herbert and Noah Grubbs remain key questions behind Notre Dame football star

“Behind him, Blake Herbert and Noah Grubbs are talented and highly sought-after freshmen with no experience. Both would benefit if Carr decides to return in 2027, giving them another season to develop. Still, both should expect to play some this season, especially because Notre Dame's schedule should include multiple blowout opportunities.”

It’s pretty clear that the Irish are only as low as 10th because the guys behind Carr are so untested. Oregon sits at the top mainly because of starting quarterback Dante Moore, but his backup, former Nebraska Cornhusker starting QB Dylan Raiola, is a big boost.

The same can be said for No. 2 Texas: Arch Manning is the headliner, but Brockermeyer mentioned that veteran quarterback MJ Morris is backing him up. So, which other teams has CBS Sports decided have better quarterback rooms than Notre Dame?

The Utah Utes are No. 3, Ole Miss is No. 4, Ohio State is No. 5, LSU is No. 6, the team that backed out of a rivalry game with Notre Dame, USC is No. 7, Miami sits at No. 8, and finally, the Houston Cougars are No. 9, one spot ahead of the Fighting Irish.
