The Notre Dame football team doesn’t play until Saturday night but there’s still plenty of reason to watch the afternoon games. The 12-team playoff field means that scoreboard watching has a different meaning this late in the season.

It’s not just about hoping a team you hate goes down for fun. The Irish need as many high seeds as possible to lose in order to keep helping them move up the bracket. The No. 5 seed is the goal and should they win out and get some help from teams like Ohio State and Florida to knock off some of the teams that could potentially keep them from it.

So far so good this early afternoon with the Hoosiers getting run off the field by Ohio State and Ole Miss finding a way to lose to a Florida Gators. Oddly enough, in the latest College Football Playoffs bracket, IU was projected to take on the Rebels. Now Lane Kiffin’s squad is almost certainly out of the playoffs and Indiana will drop if they stay in. Both will give Notre Dame football a chance to improve their own situation.

Indiana looked like it might give Ohio State all it could handle when that game started, going up 7-0 on the first drive. Then the Buckeyes took over and ended up winning in a blowout, 38-15. Ole Miss’s game was closer, but they ended up losing to Florida, 24-17.

All of this leads to yet another crazy weekend in the sport while Notre Dame Football can just take care of business and take advantage.
