There’s been a ton of talk about the Notre Dame football team’s quarterback competition already this year. Now with spring practice officially underway, people are looking for any reason to think about who is going to win the race. And while the coaching staff have already repeatedly said that there won’t be any kind of indication of who is leading until it’s time to name a starter, one QB has gotten some strong praise from his position coach.
Gino Guidugli was one of the Notre Dame offensive assistants who met with the media on Friday after practice. During that appearance, he offered plenty of juicy details about what he’s going to be looking for from the competitors. One of those competitors is CJ Carr. And while some people might consider him the dark horse at best to win the job, Guidugli has liked what he’s seen.
“Yeah, I got no complaints for the guy,” the Notre Dame football assistant said during the conference. “Sometimes you worry, because he’s such a competitor that if there was something that was ailing, he’s not gonna necessarily tell you. But when you see the ball come out of his hand, it’s flying out of there.”

While there are certainly reasons to be excited about Carr’s passing, it’s worth pointing out that Mike Denbrock’s offense usually relies on a man under center who can move with the ball. That’s one reason why Steve Angeli isn’t the shoo-in winner of the race.
Guidugli was glowing in his comments about Carr in that regard too.
“His feet look really sound,” the coach added. “He’s looking better in our zone-read stuff, pulling the ball and running or taking off and scrambling, so I’m really happy with where he’s at.”
It’s clear this isn’t a hint at who is winning the Notre Dame football quarterback race or not. But it’s also clear that CJ Carr is definitely in the race. And that’s far from a bad thing.
