Notre Dame football made its GM target richer before losing out

The Notre Dame football team is technically 0-for-2 when it comes to hiring or keeping its General Manager but the Irish have been successful in one thing.

When Chad Bowden departed South Bend for Los Angeles, the biggest talk was just how much money he got to do so. He might be talking about how he’s on the correct side these days, but by all accounts, he was given a massive bag. One report claimed that the raise was as much as three times what his salary was with the Golden Domers.

After Bowden left, the Notre Dame football team focused on Texas Tech’s James Blanchard. And while they have the kind of money that should have been very appealing, he decided to stay with the Red Raiders. While Blanchard didn’t just stay with the Big 12 squad for the money, it appears he got a very nice raise as a reward for his loyalty.

According to Max Olson, Blanchard got a new contract after deciding against going to South Bend. The ESPN reporter said that the Texas Tech staffer’s new deal is over 3 years for $1.575 million. For those who were told there would be no match, that means that he’s making $525,000 a year.

That is quite a bit more than what Bowden was making when he was with the Irish. And while it’s not as much as what he’s reportedly getting at USC, that dollar amount is almost certainly close to what the Irish had on the table for their General Manager target.

The good news here is that if they are offering that kind of money, they’ll be able to find someone else who is willing to take that bag. The bad news is that Notre Dame football lost the guy they wanted to keep and then lost out on their first target to replace him.
