This time of year is always a weird one. All kinds of odd stories come out of the NFL Combine, though usually they’re about a silly question an NFL team asked a prospect in an interview. The idea that one of the best defensive linemen in the game could be looked at for another position - that is going extinct - is a crazy one. Especially when the story centers on Notre Dame football star Howard Cross.
Cross is one of a handful of players participating at the combine that were apparently asked to try a different position than the one they played in college. For Cross, there are some NFL teams that reportedly want to see him lineup in the offensive backfield.
Specifically, for reasons passing understanding, there are some front office executives that want the Notre Dame football star to try his hand at fullback. And as unlikely it is that’s where he would find his NFL career, one has to wonder why they’d even consider asking him

- Notre Dame DT Howard Cross – FB
- Ole Miss DT JJ Pegues – FB
- TCU WR Savion Williams – RB
- SMU RB Brashard Smith – WR
- Delaware RB Marcus Yarns – WR
Cross is a bit undersized as a defensive tackle for the NFL, but it seems extremely unlikely that he’s going to be receptive to a switch to fullback at the next level.
The Notre Dame football star might work out as a fullback if for no other reason than to placate NFL execs, but he’s going to be looking to work out with other defensive lineman if he decides to work out at all.
