Since spring practice started, there’s been plenty of guesses about who might win the Notre Dame football team’s quarterback battle. Steve Angeli has long been the safe bet, simply because he’s been there the longest. He’s also spent the last two years behind Sam Hartman and Riley Leonard.
In regular Joe parlance, it’s his turn. And obviously the fact that he’s the guy who always came in when Hartman or Leonard left seemed like huge hints at who was the heir apparent. Then there is CJ Carr. The young gunslinger has the kind of arm and abilities that makes people drool. But one analyst believes the third choice is actually the correct one. And Danny Kannell claims he’s been told who the front runner is by one of the guys at practice every day watching the competition unfold.
Kannell recently appeared on the Cover 3 Podcast to offer his ideas on who is starting. He claimed that the name he’s hearing from insiders is Kenny Minchey.
Kenny Minchey gaining steam in Notre Dame football quarterback race
“I do have another source from South Bend, Kannell stated. “Oh. He is a former, well, I'll just say he's in the NFL Hall of Fame. That's where I saw him at this golf tournament. And he has a son who plays for the Fighting Irish.”
“And I said to him, I said, ‘who do you think is going to be the QB?’ And I said, ‘probably going to be Angeli, right?’ And he goes, ‘no.’ He goes, ‘I don't know. I think it's really up for grabs.’ And I said, oh, then it must be CJ Carr. And he said, no. He said, that's not the one who is flashing. He talked to his son, and he said, somebody who's been making a lot of plays is Minchey.
It’s hardly the first time that Minchey has gotten eyeballs. He played very well last spring. However, he’s never taken the starting job for the Notre Dame football team. With Mike Denbrock’s offense usually leaning on a mobile quarterback, there’s certainly a case for Kenny Minchey. With a wide open competition he might have a better chance at winning than he’s had in the past.
