Jaden Greathouse finally had the kind of game the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been hoping for since his MVP level games in the College Football Playoff in 2024 against BYU on Saturday.

While Notre Dame lost the game to the Cougars, thanks in no small part to the referees blowing a couple of calls on the final play, Greathouse received national recognition for his efforts. Greathouse was named a Comeback Player of the Week earning one of six selections for the honor this week.

Greathouse recorded a career-high eight receptions for 125 yards in Saturday’s game at BYU, becoming the third Notre Dame wide receiver this season to record a 100-yard receiving performance. His 125 receiving yards marked the second-highest single-game total of his career, trailing only his 128-yard performance in the CFP National Championship game. He averaged 15.6 yards per reception against BYU, including a season-long 38-yard catch on fourth down in the fourth quarter.

National news around Notre Dame

  • With the expansion to 24 teams in next year's College Football Playoff seemingly a done deal, there's been plenty of talk about the conferences getting rid of championship games. While the Big 12 says it will follow suit, the conference is also talking about replacing it with ... something. Which seems to miss the point of getting rid of them all together.
  • Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall is very much against the 24-team playoff and he might have made the best argument against it that anyone has made so far. In fact, he made the best argument anyone has made about what's happened to the sport over the last six years.
  • "All everything since COVID has just 100 percent been reaction. No one has ever said "OK, well if we do this, what does it look like 15 years from now?" "What does this look like 10 years from now?" "Is this in the best interest culturally of everyone?"
  • "...It's just like everybody went nuts at once. And it's just been a downward spiral that is nonstop until it's going to be a smoldering dumpster fire left like the Truffula trees and the Lorax. Like they're going to ring this sport out for every cent they can as long as they can and prostitute the sport for financial gain."

  • The Irish have figured out who they will open their season against in 2027. According to FBSchedules.com, the Irish will start its slate off in Notre Dame Stadium hosting Kent State. While everyone loves to see early top competition on a schedule, it makes sense for head coach Marcus Freeman to have an earlier game against the MAC school.
  • The Irish also have Auburn, Clemson, BYU, Duke, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, and Virginia on their 2027 schedule. Kent State was already on the schedule but has been moved up to the season opener.
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish defensive lineman Boubacar Traore was recently named to the On3 mid-season All-American team. He was the only Irish player to make the first team.
