When the Notre Dame football kicks off its spring practice, there are several players that Irish fans are excited to see get back into action. CJ Carr is one. Jeremiyah Love is another. Jason Onye is a third.
The defensive lineman was in fact, one of the biggest question marks on the team heading into 2025. He left the squad last fall for “personal” reasons and sat out most of the season. However, there were rumblings that he was on his way back. There were reports that he was “full go” for spring practice.
This past week, the Notre Dame football program announced he was one of the players that is all the way back. And if he is all the way back, he’s very likely one of the leaders on the team as it gets ready to try and make another run in the College Football Playoffs.
Notre Dame football has veteran defender back in Jason Onye
The last time the Irish talked about Onye’s status at all was early November.
“He’s taking some personal time right now to get some things that he needs,” Freeman said at the time. “If there’s a chance for him to return, we’d love to have him back. But right now, we just gotta support Jason and get him the help he needs.”
Now Jason Onye is back and will be aiding a defensive tackle room that needs help. After losing Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills to graduation. Onye will be one of three fifth or sixth-year players competing for jobs at the position, alongside fellow returner Gabriel Rubio and Louisville transfer Jared Dawson.
This year could be a big one, considering it will be his last year of eligibility. He’ll also have to find a way to mesh with the Notre Dame football defense now that it’s being run by new defensive coordinator Chris Ash.
