With all the super conferences in college football trying to box out anyone who isn’t a part of their club, there’s been quite a bit of discussion lately about whether Notre Dame should stay independent. Don’t ask Jeremiyah Love that question. The star running back will all but laugh in the questioner’s face.

Sitting down for a long interview with Sports Illustrated, Love touched on a ton of different subjects. For the most part, he was reserved and even careful, knowing that he still needed to impress as many NFL teams as possible heading into the draft later this month. But he didn’t hold back when asked about whether his old school should join a conference.

“Should Notre Dame join the conference? Nah. We keep the power to ourselves,” Love said. “We have the power to play anybody we want to play. In a conference, you got to play within your confidence. When you make the playoffs, last year we got snubbed. We put ourselves in that position. We lost the first two games. But Notre Dame should stay independent.”

The running back isn’t wrong. Now more than ever, the Irish have all kinds of power. They even have an agreement that makes it easier for them to get into the College Football Playoffs this season.

There’s been a lot of talk about teams possibly moving away from scheduling Notre Dame. Some, like USC, have followed through, even if they weren’t up front about why they killed off one of the greatest rivalries in the history of college football.

The sport is in a precarious position, especially with the ever-changing landscape of revenue sharing and NIL. If it shifts in a certain way, Notre Dame needs to reconsider how much power it has. But for now, Jeremiyah Love is right.
