A top-three NFL Draft projection should force Leonard Moore to leave Notre Dame early

With injury history creeping up, a top-three draft grade means the star defender has to go pro.

While Notre Dame’s season is far from over, NFL Mock Draft season is ramping up as the campaign enters its second stage. In one recent mock draft, if it were correct, Leonard Moore went higher than in any previous draft. In the process, he’ll be able to replicate a little Fighting Irish history.

Rob Rang of Fox Sports put together a mock draft earlier this month with a couple of surprises for Notre Dame fans. Right at the top of the list, Rang has more going No. 3 overall, this time to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Rang is right, it would mean the Golden Domers would have a third overall pick in back-to-back seasons.

Obviously, because the season isn’t even half over for NFL teams, where a team will draft is still very much up in the air. On the other hand, Tampa is having an awful season, and they were losing even when quarterback Baker Mayfield was healthy and playing.

For now, Baker is injured and sidelined, and Tampa is losing games even faster. In other words, the Bucs may be playing themselves into getting the best defensive back in the draft class (assuming he goes pro).

Leonard Moore headlines four Notre Dame football stars in recent NFL mock draft

Whether he’s heading to the NFL this spring is an open question, for no reason other than he missed a few games this year with a concussion. He might want one more season to really juice up his resume. On the other hand, if he’s as high on other draft boards as Rang has him, he can’t boost his resume any higher and absolutely should head off as soon as he possibly can.

Moore has missed action due to injuries in both of the last two years. The good news is that while some athletes reinjure parts of their body, the Notre Dame star’s injuries are completely unrelated. Still, a third year in college, if he gets hurt again, will leave some teams wondering about his durability.

Moore, ranked as the No. 3 overall pick, is just part of the good news that Rang offers, assuming his predictions are accurate. In addition to the star defensive back, offensive guard Anthonie Knapp is pegged as the No. 22 pick by the Cleveland Browns.

Just a few picks later, Notre Dame’s defensive back on the other side of the field for Moore is slated for the No. 28 overall pick, with DJ McKinney heading to the Chicago Bears. Finally, quarterback CJ Carr is picked No. 30 by the Minnesota Vikings.

A lot will change between now and this spring, but Leonard Moore having a chance to go No. 3 overall would be massive for him and for Notre Dame as the school he attended.
