When the Notre Dame football team adopted the motto "Leave No Doubt," most outsiders took it to mean that the Fighting Irish wanted to play with a chip on their shoulder. However, head coach Marcus Freeman says there's definitely been some misinterpretation about just how his team is leaning on those three words during the 2026 season.
Appearing on Rich Eisen's show on Monday afternoon, Freeman was asked what exactly the motto meant to him. He patiently and carefully explained that it wasn't meant to be motivation to go out, run up the score, and leave Fighting Irish opponents in a pool of their own tears. Instead, while it is a motivational tool, it's more about ensuring the Golden Domers are trying their best and improving from one day to the next.
"A lot of people are running with this thought that we have a chip on our shoulder. We have to leave no doubt this year because of what happened last year," Freeman explained, pointing to getting jumped in the College Football Playoff on the last weekend of the season and thereby getting snubbed entirely.
"No," Freeman continued. "I use it, and we use it as a reminder to leave no doubt today that this is the best Monday that you prepared tremendously. You did everything you were supposed to do to elevate on this Monday. And that's how we're using that as a program is to leave no doubt with what we have guaranteed. And that's this game in front of us. That's the opportunity we have today and a chance to get better."

Notre Dame football uses 'Leave No Doubt' to emphasize daily preparation
Eisen did argument a bit with Freeman that while that might be the meaning of the phrase internall, the Notre Dame head coach has to know why people think Leave No Doubt means something else entirely.
Showing that as Eisen put it, Freeman is indeed "whip smart," the Irish coach did admit that he understands that the motto can mean different things. What he wanted his players to take away from it though, was that they need to leave no doubt in how they play and how they prepare because it doesn't do any good to blame other people for what happened last year.
Essentially, Freeman wants the players to not just go by a catch phrase that means they know they can't leave it up to other people, but they need to approach how they do everything so that the players themselves aren't doubting the gameplan or if they're ready or if they know what they have to do when the game kicks off.
In the process of coming up with Leave No Doubt, Marcus Freeman has found the perfect motto for this Notre Dame football team. It's a theme that not only brings more focus, but puts the focus where it should be.
