It's not a traditional rivalry, but there's no love lost between the Notre Dame football program and Penn State. That was on full display once again during ESPN College GameDay's coverage on Saturday morning.
The weekly pregame show is filming from Happy Valley in anticipation of Penn State's clash against the Oregon Ducks in what could be a very early statement on who will be the Big Ten champs. Despite the important game ahead of them, Nittany Lions fans couldn't help but voice their displeasure with Marcus Freeman when he made an appearance on the show ahead of his own game against Arkansas.
Penn State fans showed disdain for Marcus Freeman
Once ESPN College GameDay went live with the Notre Dame head coach, the Penn State fans let their antipathy against Freeman be known loudly and proudly.
As Freeman discussed how his team was prepping for the Razorbacks, the fans could be heard chanting "overated" in the background. At one point, it became very clear that the chanting was loud enough in his earpiece that it briefly caused him to lose his train of thought.
Penn State fans are clearly still annoyed that while the Irish are 1-2 this year, Notre Dame managed to manhandle the Nittany Lions in the College Football Playoffs on their way to the National Title game.
Notre Dame football is still a Penn State villain
It's worth pointing out that PSU, which has played a much easier schedule coming into Saturday, might also be 1-2 if it took on the same opponents the Notre Dame football team has faced. That's just one of the reasons that the sour grapes aimed at Marcus Freeman likely didn't faze him much. Hopefully, he gets another chance this season to shove James Franklin into a locker when it's all said and done.
