For the first time since Marcus Freeman’s initial season with the Notre Dame football program, the Irish are in the midst of a real, honest-to-goodness quarterback competition. And while that competition officially kicked off on Wednesday with the first day of spring practice, it’s clear that Freeman doesn’t know who the front runner is.

As he addressed the media on Wednesday morning Freeman talked about the approach he and his staff will take when looking at anointing the winner of the competition between CJ Carr, Steve Angeli and Kenny Minchey.

“I don’t know if there’s a perfect science,” the Notre Dame football head coach said during his first spring practice press conference. “That I’m going to be able to tell you right now that this is exactly how we’re going to do it. But the general theme of it is they’re all going to get reps with the ones they’re all going to get reps that we split.”

Freeman also said that people shouldn’t expect a starter to be named anytime soon. He wanted people to realize that while there will be obvious curiosity about who who is going to be QB1, he’ll announce the starter when the timing is right.

“We’ll name a starter when a starter clearly shows that he’s the best quarterback. I don’t want to put a timetable on (it), and I refuse to do that. To me, if you don’t have a decision made by then, it’s going to frustrate you, and there’s no need to put a timetable on it. You let those guys compete, and when a starter is determined, we’re going to announce it.”

The Notre Dame football head coach closed his comments about the quarterback battle by saying he was excited to see how everything plays out.
