When Steve Angeli transferred from the Notre Dame football team to Syracuse, this day seemed inevitable. Now it's official. The former Irish quarterback will face off against his old squad this fall.

Angeli spent several seasons with Notre Dame, biding his time and hoping to earn a starting spot. He entered the spring in a three-person battle with CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey, but when the smoke cleared on that practice session, he decided it was in his best interest to go elsewhere.

Steve Angeli named Syracuse starter sets up a Notre Dame football reunion

Angeli was named the Orange's starting quarterback for the 2025 season on Monday morning, making it clear that if playing time over championship contention was key for him, then his decision to leave was the right decision. Granted, Syracuse has enough talent and the ACC is wide open enough, it's possible he could engineer enough upsets to get both.

One of those potential upsets will come on November 22 when he brings his new squad to face off against Notre Dame. Syracuse comes to town as both teams wind down their regular season.

It stands to reason that while he will officially be an enemy and standing in the way of the Blue and Gold marching their way into the playoffs and a potential top seed, it will be quite the homecoming for the veteran quarterback.

It seems unlikely Steve Angeli will hear any boos when he runs onto the field. Notre Dame football fans should plan to cheer him loudly, even if he's standing on the other sideline. After that, root against him all you want.
