One of the most interesting things we’re starting to see from multiple years of the transfer portal, is one player landing on multiple teams in consecutive seasons. The latest evidence of this comes in the form of ex-Notre Dame football player Tobias Merriweather.

Merriweather departed South Bend last winter through the transfer portal and at first glance, found a home that would allow him to really blossom after limited time with the Golden Domers. The wideout signed with the Cal Golden Bears for the 2024 season but proceeded to catch just 11 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. That was actually less production than the season before with Marcus Freeman and company.

And that would seem why the former Notre Dame football player is back in the portal, looking for his third team in a third season in the sport. Now it’s a matter of where the Camas, Washington product might finally find a place that fits him well enough that he can be the high volume receiver he clearly wants to be.

The season before he decided to leave South Bend, the wide receiver caught 14 passes for 284 yards and 2 touchdowns. More importantly, he averaged over 20 yards per reception and some believed he was going to become a deep threat for the Irish offense in 2024.

It seems unlikely that we’ll see a return to Notre Dame for the wideout, though stranger things have happened. He was a talented high school prospect in the 2023 class, rated as the No. 2 player in the state of Washington and No. 133 player in his entire class by the On3 industry rankings.

It will certainly be interesting to see if the former Notre Dame football player’s third team might finally do the trick and allow him to find that greener grass he’s been on the lookout for.
