Could former Notre Dame quarterback and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees soon become the leader of the Michigan Wolverines? With the firing of Sherrone Moore, it's at least a possibility.
Moore was shown the door in Ann Arbor on Wednesday night after an investigation by the university found that he was having an "inappopriate relationship" with a staffer. Not long after Michigan fired him, ESPN put together a list of the top candidates to replace him, and Rees was among them.
"He's only 33, so there would be some risk involved, but Rees has positioned himself for head coaching opportunities in the near future. He was a top candidate at North Carolina last year and has been on the radar at UCLA and elsewhere. Things obviously haven't gone great with the Browns the past two seasons, but the issues in Cleveland go deeper than Rees."
Tommy Rees could go from Notre Dame to Michigan after Sherrone Moore exit
"A former Notre Dame quarterback under Brian Kelly, Rees began his coaching career in the Big Ten as a graduate assistant at Northwestern and held coordinator roles with Notre Dame and Alabama before entering the NFL. He might be a bit of a stretch for Michigan, but an interview would make sense, especially given the timing of this search," Adam Rittenberg wrote.
If Michigan does decide to interview Rees, it wouldn't be the first Big Ten school that's shown interest very recently. Reports last week indicated that Penn State was looking to talk to him before it settled on Matt Campbell.
While Notre Dame and Michigan don't play every year anymore, it would still be quite interesting to see a former Irish signal caller at the helm of one of the school's most bitter rivals.
