Think former Notre Dame football OC Tommy Rees regrets getting Shedeur Sanders yet? The ex-Colorado Buffalo quarterback has brought his fair share of drama with him to the city by the lake, and not all of it is even his doing. That includes a recent rumor that claimed Sanders had slid all the way down the depth chart.
The newest drama sparked up this week when rumors started circulating that Sanders wasn't just riding the pine during the games, but wasn't even leading the scout team in preparing for the games. That would be quite the insult to a quarterback who entered 2024 as a Heisman candidate.
Tommy Rees, who departed the Notre Dame football team ahead of the 2023 season, is now the offensive coordinator for the Browns and has had all kinds of Shedeur Sanders drama land in his lap since the team drafted the QB. However, he's tried to stay out of this situation, instead allowing quarterbacks coach Billy Musgrave to tackle this issue.
Ex-Notre Dame football coach Tommy Rees dealing with Shedeur Sanders rumors in Cleveland
After the talk sparked up that it was Bailey Zappe who is leading the scout team reps, Musgrave came out and explained that all the backup quarterbacks are taking reps for the practice squad.
"We’re doing some things to replicate Baltimore’s quarterback Lamar (Jackson) this week with all three guys to really give the defense a good look," Musgrave reportedly said. "Being a scout team quarterback, you’re working on your own craft, but, really it’s an art form to replicate the opponent so the defense can be ready to do their thing on Sunday."
While some might think that puts the rumors to bed, it's worth pointing out that Musgrave didn't really address Shedeur Sanders directly. That likely means that Tommy Rees and the rest of the staff will continue to have to deal with this kind of talk further into the season.
One has to wonder if the former Notre Dame football coach is ready to come back to the college ranks yet.
