While the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team was busy beating up on the Stanford Cardinal, they were hardly the only squad that had themselves a very good weekend. At the top of the other sports, the women's basketball team had a massive victory and secured Avery Arije on Friday.
- Arije is a 5-star guard, the top player at her position in the 2027 class and the No. 13 player in the entire cycle. She's also got extensive experience with the Canadian national team dating to 2023, with appearances at the 2023 and 2025 FIBA U16 Women's AmeriCup -- winning a silver in the latter and making the tournament's All-Star five -- and the 2024 and 2026 FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cups on her résumé.
- "I chose Notre Dame because it felt like the perfect fit," she said, according to ESPN. "The development is next level. It's evident in the players they've produced. I have a chance to get a great degree, and I've felt so much love from the staff at Notre Dame."
More Notre Dame Fighting Irish news
- Now that it's officially time for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to turn their attention to BYU, it will be interesting to see how oddsmakers see the game playing out. Earlier this week, the Irish opened as 13.5 -point favorites. But that was before the Cougars lost star running back L.J. Martin to injury.
- One week after playing Notre Dame closer than any other opponent this season, the North Carolina Tar Heels pulled off the first win over a Top 25 team in Bill Belichick's career at Chapel Hill. His squad beat No. 25 Pittsburgh, which had just entered the poll after complaining that it wasn't ranked in the preseason Top 25, while Penn State was. Oops.
- The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team started its season with a weekend sweep of Niagara. The Irish won 3-1 on Thursday and 4-0 on Friday. Next week, they'll have a much stronger opponent as they travel to No. 8 Western Michigan for a Friday-Saturday series.
- With Texas upset by an Oklahoma last-second field goal, the No. 1 spot in the rankings is open for someone to claim. Georgia is the odds-on-favorite to take that spot, after winning a close slugfest with No. 6 Alabama but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will likely get a few first-place votes. If they can thump a Top 10 BYU squad next week, they'll get even more.
