Notre Dame women’s basketball star hints at surprising reason for Sweet 16 stumble

After another early exit, a Notre Dame star wonders if too much talent — not too little — was the problem all along.

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team is officially in the mode where they try and figure out why their season ended in the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight time and why they won’t, once again be going to the Elite Eight. The question is an even better one because of the talent that is on this roster.

However, what if it’s the level of talent on the roster that is the problem? Star guard Sonia Citron certainly thinks there’s a chance that somehow, the Blue and Gold have so much talent they just don’t know what to do with it.

When talking about another early exit despite Citron, Hannah Hidalgo, Olivia Miles, Liatu King, and Maddy Westbeld, it’s possible there’s something to that theory.

"I think we just had so much talent. Sometimes too much talent, you know, we didn't even know what to do with it,” Citron said after the Notre Dame women’s basketball team lost on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, while TCU has quite a bit of talent on their roster, it’s very clear that it has one player that will carry the team. Hailey Van Lith is “the woman.” She’s the one that is better than anyone else on the squad. And when she teamed up with Angel Reese at LSU last season, their postseason fell short.

It is of course, Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Niele Ivey’s job to figure out how to use the talent she is provided. One could argue she didn’t do the best job of that this season. If a large portion of it comes back next fall, she’s going to have to figure out a better formula.
