Former head coach says Notre Dame football shouldn't be favored over Louisville
Now that the Notre Dame football team has upended the Miami Redhawks, it’s officially time to turn their attention to another kind of bird. The Fighting Irish take on the Louisville Cardinals on Saturday afternoon in what is a matchup between two ranked teams.
It’s also a matchup between two teams who know each other pretty well. And it’s a game where the Irish are no doubt, looking for a little revenge. After all, it’s safe to say the loss to the Cards is a big reason why the Blue and Gold’s desires of a playoff appearance ended.
This year, largely because the game is played in South Bend, the Notre Dame football team is favored by about a touchdown. However, there is at least one former head coach who believes they’re not up to the task. Rick Neuheisel thinks it’s Louisville that should be the one favored.
Notre Dame football shouldn’t be favored, says analyst
“The wrong team's favored here, Neuheisel said on a segment for CBS College Football. “This should be Louisville favored. If you can get Notre Dame behind and force Riley Leonard into having to throw, and I was strong just a little bit ago saying that he can't throw. He certainly can, but he is inconsistent, missing a lot of wide-open guys. I don't know if it's a matter of still injured or what have you, but if they're going to be that inconsistent with the forward pass, it's incumbent upon Louisville to get a lead.”
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that there are people out there who aren’t convinced the Irish have a good enough passing game to contend with Top 25 teams. So far, Notre Dame simply hasn’t illustrated that they do have that kind of offense.
The Irish have looked strikingly one dimensional. And when there has been a sign of life, it’s been again teams that simply haven’t been all that impressive.
The Notre Dame football team has a chance to prove Neuheisel and the rest of the college football world wrong on Saturday. But there’s plenty of people nervous about whether or not they can.
