It’s that time of year once again. Major League Baseball teams had to decide whether or not they were going to be buyers, and add players to their roster in order to make a playoff run, or be sellers and try and get rid of as many expensive contracts as possible. This year, one former Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball player was involved in all the hubbub.

First baseman Niko Kavadas was a member of the Boston Redsox organization. In fact, he was viewed as someone who might be an important part of the team’s future, despite being an 11th round pick back in the day.

However, at least for now, Kavadas will have to prove himself to an entirely new organization. On Tuesday, the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish star was dealt as part of one of the many trade deadline deals that went down.

Kavadas was involved in a deal that saw him get sent to the Los Angeles Angels organization. The infielder was sent to the Angels alongside fellow Red Sox farmhands outfielder Matthew Lugo and pitchers Yeferson Vargas and Ryan Zeferjahn in exchange for hard throwing righty, Luis Garcia.

In this instance, the Redsox are the buyers, and the Angels were the sellers. And Los Angeles has boosted its farm system with the trade.

This season Kavadas has been crushing the ball, hitting .281 with 17 home runs and 63 RBI in AAA. However,  since first baseman Nolan Schanuel already made his debut with the Angels and sticking around in the majors, there isn’t a natural fit for the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball star at the big league level unless it’s as a designated hitter.
