Latest expansion talk has led to ridiculous Notre Dame football rumors
It’s almost a foregone conclusion that the college football landscape isn’t done shifting. Florida State and Clemson want out of the ACC, and sooner or later they’ll get their wish. But the idea that Notre Dame football might join them is more than a little preposterous.
The Fighting Irish have made it clear over the last few years that they love their independence. The school signed a new deal just last year to maintain its lack of conference affiliation.

And while it’s possible that Notre Dame football might eventually decide it needs to align itself with a conference, it’s not coming soon. And it won’t be the Big 12. Despite rumors to the contrary.
Notre Dame football isn’t joining the Big 12 anytime soon
“Breaking: Florida State, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Miami are in deep talks with the Big 12. Brett Yormark has secured a private equity deal that could make these four schools the richest in college football, while significantly boosting payouts for the rest of the Big 12 teams,” read one rather ridiculous report.
Yet another rumor sparked up that the Fighting Irish wouldn’t join Florida State and Clemson in the Big 12, but would instead head to the Big Ten.
All of this comes from a report from Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. He claims that buzz during the Big 12’s media days, says there’s a possibility of Florida State and Clemson joining the Big 12.
He added that the schools have three main options: joining the Big Ten or SEC, or reforming the ACC with a smaller number of teams.
It’s worth pointing out that Dellenger never mentioned the Notre Dame football team in his reporting. That’s because he likely knows that the Irish have zero interest in joining a conference until they absolutely have to do so.
