Notre Dame Fighting Irish won’t see ACC fall apart just yet

If Florida State and Clemson are leaving the ACC, it won't be this year or next as the deadline is just about here to announce such a move.

While the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are famously independent in football, they’re tied to the ACC within several other sports. Knowing that, the rumors that the conference was in dire straits wasn’t a good thing.

It looks like for now, the Irish got a reprieve. For at least the next few years, the ACC is staying the way it is now. No leaving. No forcing a team’s way out.

On Monday, Pete Thamel reported that it looks like the Fighting Irish won’t have to worry about any of that. Because neither Florida State or Clemson are expected to try and leave the conference before the Aug. 15 deadline.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish won’t see ACC fall apart just yet

Once the Big 12 and SEC Media Days kicked off, there was quite a bit of talk about where one team or another might go. However, it looks like for now, the Seminoles and Tigers are stuck.

Some of that could be due to the SEC especially making it clear they don’t really see FSU as a potential partner. There are some who have talked as thought the Seminoles’ behavior since missing the College Football Playoff has been something no one wants to deal with.

Thamel further explained that their lack of movement isn’t because either team is suddenly happy where they are.

“They are both in the throes of ongoing legal battles regarding the ACC’s grant of rights and withdrawal fees, so there’s been little expectation of imminent movement,” he wrote.

That of course means that someday soon, both teams will likely be trying to get out. The ACC isn’t going to be around as it currently is for much longer. However, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish don’t have to worry about that kind of thing for the next few years. We’ll see how long that lasts.
