There are just 17 days until the Notre Dame football team kicks off its season. First up is the Texas A&M Aggies. Riley Leonard vs. Mike Elko. Mike Elko vs. the team he served as defensive coordinator. Marcus Freeman vs. his third season in South Bend.

But the battle isn't just on the field. The fanbases of the Fighting Irish and the Aggies are also gearing up for a showdown. The air is thick with anticipation and the fans are starting to engage in friendly banter, adding an extra layer of excitement to the upcoming game.

That's to be expected, especially considering how vital this Notre Dame football season is for Freeman and his gang. They need to make the playoffs, and then they need to make some noise once they get there. The fans are feeling the stress around the 2024 campaign, and they're venting that stress by going up against rival fans on social media.

As one Irish fan pointed out, some of the animosity between the two teams' fanbases is due to expectations vs. reality.

"Texas A&M fans like to call out ND for their lack of recent success," one Twitter user wrote. "But Texas A&M last won a national championship in 1939. Yikes.

"Texas A&M has only won 10 games in a season once since 1999," replied another. "Notre Dame had won 10 games in a season ten times since 1999."

Meanwhile, Texas A&M fans are discussing how they can start the redemption tour against the Irish. There is quite a bit of excitement on both sides of the ball.

Things are only going to get more interesting as we approach the season opener on August 31. It's not an ideal start for the Notre Dame football team, considering so many other teams are kicking off their campaigns against creampuffs.

On the other hand, a win against the SEC school will allow the Irish to set the tone for the season. They don't have a ton of contests against high-profile opponents, and this is one of them.
