Notre Dame football could see QB1 battle brewing for 2025 already
By JJ Ceglio
As we all know Notre Dame football landed 4-star 2024 QB CJ Carr who was projected to start next year. But after a few impressive showings from Bergen Catholic recruit Steve Angeli, we might have a battle on our hands after Riley Leonard is long gone.
Is CJ Carr's future as a potential QB1 for Notre Dame football in jeopardy?
There is definitely a narrative that could lead Angeli to become QB1 for the Notre Dame football team in 2025. However, I don't think that you could pass up an opportunity to make Carr a 3 year or even potentially 4 year quarterback. Carr has a very strong skillset, and for good reason was a top 5 QB in his class.
Carr had offers from Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Missouri, Maryland, Minnesota, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Mississippi State, Arizona, Indiana, and Kansas. One of the more sought-after QBs there is good reason that experts say Notre Dame landed a gem.
Does Steve Angeli deserve to be QB1?
There is a case for the 3-star from Oradell. When he played in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl vs Oregon State, he went 15/19 with 232 yards and 3 touchdowns for a 78.9 completion percentage and a 96.1 QBR. In high school he tore up the New Jersey Catholic League, winning multiple state championships at Bergen Catholic.
Don't let the stars fool you, Angeli has the potential to be one of the best QBs in his class if not the best. Angeli also might have the potential to have a true QB battle with Duke transfer and consensus QB1 Riley Leonard. He had solid showings in spring games but has never truly had a shot minus the Sun Bowl. So I am very interested to see this QB battle.
Who would be your choice for 2025's QB1?
Between these two, it is a tossup. Both Angeli and Carr have presented very good qualities as to why they are QBs at Notre Dame, not some MAC, Mountain West, or other group of 5 team. It is very difficult to pick between the two.
But in terms of who I would rather have, Angeli might be a tad bit more experienced but personally I would give it to CJ Carr. He was ranked highly for 2024 QBs and a former 5 star for a reason. It is also hard to ignore how accomplished CJ truly was.
At Saline over 3 years he put up 577 completions on 861 attempts, a 67% completion percentage 8,135 YDS, and 78 TD. If Denbrock can make Riley Leonard successful, who knows what he can do with a former 5-star and arguably the most hyped QB of the 2024 class.
