The Notre Dame football team already has one loss to a MAC team this year after being favored by more than 20 points. On Saturday, they’ll attempt to avoid a repeat a Miami team that went 11-3 in 2023.

Irish head coach knows his team is already a cautionary tale. Now it will face off against a head coach who knows the program well, even if he wasn't around when Marcus Freeman took over the helm. Chuck Martin is a massive fan of Notre Dame. That doesn’t mean he won’t rejoice if his Redhawks find a way to topple the school he coached at for four seasons.

"My personal opinion, we’re going to the greatest venue on the planet. I’ve been a diehard Notre Dame stan since probably the first thing my parents taught me,” Martin said during his Monday press conference previewing the Notre Dame football game.

While he’s excited to come home, he also feels his team’s season has already prepared him for dealing with the Fighting Irish. Miami has already played two Power 4 teams and lost to both. Martin thinks he knows how to try and avoid that on Saturday.

Notre Dame football opponent’s coach is well versed in all things Irish

“There’s details in fundamentals that you’re still fighting for the consistency that we want. Defense is a little bit closer than the other units. We did a lot of good things on ST, but obviously we had a critical error on ST. So it negates a lot of the good things we did. You have to play clean football.”

That probably sounds eerily familiar to fans of the Blue and Gold. Even with the 66-7 win over Purdue last weekend, there are still things Marcus Freeman’s crew needs to improve. However, unlike the Redhawks, it’s not the defense.

For the Notre Dame football team, it’s a passing game that still hasn’t showed up the coaching staff wants to see finally wake up. Considering that Martin’s final season in South Bend was spent as the quarterbacks coach, it’s possible he has pinpointed something going wrong with Riley Leonard. We’ll know more about that come Saturday.
