As the Notre Dame football team gets ready for the 2024 campaign, they’re dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s. On Sunday, that meant that the Fighting Irish named their team captains

It’s one of those things that college football teams all over the country do. It can seem largely ceremonial, but it also means quite a lot to the guys who are getting named. These tend to be the guys who are already seen as team leaders, guys their teammates will listen to. And guys that the team will listen to if they’ve gotten a bit tired of listening to their coaches yell at them.

The Notre Dame football has five captains for the 2024 season. Most of those captains are guys who have been around for quite a while. The one that sticks out the most as a new arrival for the Fighting Irish is Riley Leonard. The transfer from Duke has looked like a leader for a while, and now it’s official.

Linebacker Jack Kiser, Leonard, defensive lineman Rylie Mills, defensive back Benjamin Morrison, and safety Xavier Watts are the official Fighting Irish captains.

You might notice that not only are four of the five veterans of Notre Dame, but four of five are on the defensive side of the ball.

One has to wonder if Leonard hadn’t come to South Bend this offseason, if there would have even really been an offensive captain. Steve Angeli might have fit that bill, but you’ve got to wonder.

However that might have shaken out, we now know who the Notre Dame football captains are for the coming season.
