In college sports, one generation moving on and the next one moving in is just the facts of life. With the transfer portal, it tends to happen even quicker. Such is the case with Notre Dame football, especially at the quarterback position.

Riley Leonard is manning the position for exactly one year. Then he’ll turn it over to guys like CJ Carr and Deuce Knight. But it appears that Knight and Leonard are making sure that there’s some continuity involved, even if the two players are never actually teammates.

While Knight was working out with his high school team, preparing for the season before he becomes a member of the Notre Dame football team, the quarterback took some time to talk about the relationship with Leonard.

“We've been building a great relationship ever since he got up to Notre Dame,” Knight told Matt DeGregorio. “I really didn't see him for the first couple months cuz he was on and off just getting back healthy. But this past summer, I've been with Riley a lot, just up in Notre Dame.”

Even down here, Riley invited me to come train with him, so that was real special. Riley, that's a great guy, man. He always gonna try to make sure you're too good. He wants to make sure you're too good. He always checking up on you, just making sure you're good and things like that.”

“Yeah, Riley's just a great guy. I always tell him, he's like the funniest dude in the world to me. He's a great guy.”

If you missed it, that was about five times that Knight called Leonard a “great guy.” It’s clear the two quarterbacks have hit it off. And they’ve done it in a way you just don’t see very often. In the Notre Dame football program or anywhere else.
