Quintet of former Notre Dame Fighting Irish athletes have medaled at Olympics
If you’re someone who wants to ignore all the ridiculous hoopla and outrage over the Olympics opening ceremony, then perhaps you should focus in on what former Notre Dame Fighting Irish athletes are doing at these Olympic Games.
While there’s still several other events to be staged in Paris, Notre Dame has already had five athletes medal in a wide variety of sports. Two athletes, Chris Guiliano and Lee Kiefer are bringing home at least one gold medal each. For Kiefer, it’s the second straight Olympics that the fencing star managed to grab the gold.
Guiliano got the gold in Men’s 4x100 Freestyle Relay. Eleanor Harvey represented her home country of Canada in Foil-Fencing and got the bronze medal, marking two former Notre Dame Fighting Irish stars to get the medal in that event.
It is in fact, quite impressive how many foil and fencing athletes Notre Dame has produced that medaled. Eszter Muhari got the bronce for Hungary in Individual Épée- Fencing and Nick Itkin in Men’s Individual Foil- Fencing.
Five Notre Dame Fighting Irish stars medal in Paris Olympics
Chris Guiliano is not only the first Notre Dame men’s swimmer to represent Team USA at an Olympic Games. Now, he is the first gold medalist.
It’s not just the Irish that are getting impressive representation at these games. Guiliano, 21, was the third athlete with Hoosier ties to win a medal on Day 1. Indianapolis diver Sarah Bacon won a silver on synchronized 3-meter and Brownsburg cyclist Chloe Dygert took bronze in the individual time trial.
They of course were joined by the many members of the fencing team that all have ties to the state and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Even if some of those athletes are representing other countries, it’s still quite an honor for the school.
