At this point, every politician on the face of the planet should know there is literally no one who actually wants them to get involved in discussions around sports. They almost, to a person, always ruin whatever they're getting involved in. Perhaps that means that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' getting involved in the College Football Playoffs debate is good news for the Notre Dame football team.
The former candidate for President took to social media to join in on the debate that's been raging for weeks, and that's centered around the Hurricanes and Fighting Irish. Despite Miami winning a head-to-head matchup with ND, Marcus Freeman's squad is ranked higher in the CFP rankings.
"If ND gets in and Miami doesn’t, it will further erode the importance of the regular season," DeSantis wrote on X over a post showing the Irish have better odds to get into the CFP than the 'Canes.
If ND gets in and Miami doesn’t, it will further erode the importance of the regular season. I’m OK with both getting in, but identical records should mean the head-to-head is the tiebreaker if you have to choose between them. https://t.co/tPRRhqGijb

Florida’s governor says head-to-head should decide Notre Dame vs Miami.
"I’m OK with both getting in, but identical records should mean the head-to-head is the tiebreaker if you have to choose between them."
As far as politicians getting involved in sports issues, the Florida governor's comments were pretty tame. He wasn't pulling a Jeff Landry, the Louisiana governor who made loud proclamations after LSU fired Brian Kelly. He wasn't pulling a Ted Cruz, who tends to sink whatever team he visits in person.
DeSantis also has a point. The debate has focused on Miami vs Notre Dame when other teams should make way for both the Hurricanes and the Fighting Irish.
If the point of the College Football Playoffs is to have the 12 best teams, then Notre Dame is one of them. The way Miami has played most of the season, they look like one, too. The SEC is where the discussion should center on cutting the fat from the field of 12.
