Notre Dame football fans who are already annoyed with defensive coordinator Chris Ash are only going to be more annoyed by Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman's recent comments regarding the Irish defense.
Ash has been under fire since the season kicked off after taking over a unit that was turned into a weapon by former DC Al Golden. That defense has mostly been a bump in the road at the absolute best in the Golden Domers' opponents' offensive game plan. A unit that instilled fear in opponents last year is now one where head coaches like Pittman talk about how they think they can beat them.
Arkansas head coach doesn't seem bothered by Notre Dame defense
"I think we match up well, with great respect, against what they do,” Pittman said about the Notre Dame defense. "They’re good on the (defensive) line, but I think we have good matchups against them. I really like their (middle) linebacker, (Drayk) Bowen. He can run side to side. We have to get him blocked -- we just have to -- because he can run and he’s physical."
Arkansas might only be 2-2, but execution late in games could have them 4-0 pretty easily. They've scored over 30 points in every game so far this year and 50 points twice. The offense isn't the Razorbacks' problem.
The defense is absolutely Notre Dame's problem. Marcus Freeman has admitted that early and often. When someone like Sam Pittman, who is expected to be fired before the season is out, has so little respect for the unit, that's an insult to the injuries that have already accrued this season.
