Notre Dame is only 3-2, and at No. 16 in the country, it will still be an uphill battle to get into the College Football Playoff, but that hasn’t killed the confidence of Marcus Freeman’s team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The Irish have been one of the highest scoring teams in the country, and though they only managed 28 points against Boise State on Saturday, wide receiver Malachi Field almost certainly thinks they could have scored more.
The official Notre Dame Football account posted a sideline video of the senior transfer from Virginia talking to his teammates and pleading with offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock to dial up a fade ball for him in the end zone. Eventually, Denbrock acquiesced, CJ Carr threw an excellent pass, and Fields scored his second touchdown of the season.

Notre Dame offense should have put up more points on Boise State
For the first time this year, Carr failed to throw for 200 yards, finishing 15 of 23 for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Four of those completions went to Fields, Notre Dame’s second-leading receiver on the year, but Carr left plenty on the table, narrowly missing multiple deep pass attempts, including one in the end zone.
The Notre Dame run game also failed to capitalize on all of its opportunities in the game. On the opening series, the Irish drove 73 yards on 10 plays only to have Jeremiyah Love stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Love finished with 103 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries against a rushing defense that ranked outside of the top 100 nationally, heading into the matchup.
Last season, Notre Dame suffered a devastating early-season loss to Northern Illinois, which forced Marcus Freeman’s team to have to run the table to make the College Football Playoff. They responded by winning every game until the national championship game against Ohio State.
This year, Notre Dame had a similar start, losing back-to-back games to Miami and Texas A&M, essentially the equivalent of one loss to a middling MAC program. Now, the Irish have to win out again, but the task doesn’t appear to daunting to Freeman’s player. Fields knew he could score a touchdown against Boise State, and it feels like the Irish know they can win 10 straight games to make the CFP.
