No. 4 Notre Dame brought several streaks into Coral Gables, but they didn’t leave with any of them. The confident and upset minded Miami Hurricanes gave the Irish a little bit of their own medicine, ending the game on a 23-14 run to ward off the comeback attempt in a 78-63 victory. The Irish whittled the lead down to six before the Canes put the game away.

The Irish (14-2, 2-12) have become known for coming out of the gates on fire in the past few seasons, but not on this night. A poor shooting first left them down 40-20 at the half. The only other time they have trailed by that much was to Connecticut, their only other loss of the season.

The defeat ended several streaks for the Irish. 21 straight against the ACC. 30 straight on the road. And they had also lost to an unranked opponent for the first time in 62 games. while the loss is disappointing, coach Muffet McGraw sees the ability to learn from the loss.

"”You never like to lose, but we’re just so darn young sometimes that we needed maybe a kick in the pants to kind of say we need to come out ready,”said Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw."

Jewell Loyd led the Irish with 27 points, and Brianna Turner added 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Taya Reimer missed the game due to personal reasons, after starting all 15 games this season.

Miami (12-3, 2-0) head coach Katie Meier believed her girls could pull the upset, and wasn’t at all surprised when they did.

"”We knew that we would have an opportunity, and then we would have some adversity, and then we would have to come back,” Meier said. ”So we scripted the game in their minds.”"

Adrienne Motley scored a career-high 32 points for the Hurricanes, but it was a great team effort all around. Jassany Williams blocked a school record nine shots, while Suriya McGuire added 11. The Canes bench also outscored the Irish 21-7.

The Irish came in averaging 86 points per game, but shot just 24 percent in the first half, scoring only six field goals in the half.

The Irish will host the Boston College Eagles on Sunday.
