We have three questions about every player on the Notre Dame football roster this spring.

There will be about 65 guys on scholarship for spring football this year. We are going to take a look at each one (“alphabetically” for dewey decimal fans), and ask a few questions. What those questions will be, are probably more important than the answers actually given before September- if any are given at all.

JR. Alex Bars went the normal route of redshirting his freshman year, but he saw some significant playing time his sophomore year as well as two straight starts until he broke his ankle against Southern Cal.. OL. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. ALEX BARS

1. How will Alex Bars’s injured ankle hold up this spring?

When Alex broke his ankle, it was said that the break was similar to what Malik Zaire had done. So… that’s fairly significant. I can’t remember seeing too many updates on his condition since, but I can’t imagine Bars being pushed too hard this spring. Ankle injuries are horrific for offensive linemen- perhaps worse than knee injuries, and given the numbers situation for 2016, I doubt Kelly wants to risk more.

2. Where does Alex Bars fit on the 2016 offensive line for Notre Dame?

Bars is actually listed as an offensive tackle and last year he was cross-trained to basically be the next man in at either guard or tackle. Bars did that for Quenton Nelson at guard when Nelson went down and started two games. In college football the mantra is to put your best five linemen out on the field. Bars fits that description, and will likely be a guard in 2016.

3. What else should we know or dwell on about Alex Bars?

Although this doesn’t entirely fit into the 2016 season, Alex has a chance to be a part of an offensive line that will have a two year run together. If the starting lineup this year is McGlinchey, Bars, Mustipher, Nelson, and Biven it would also most likely be the same lineup in 2017.

This season may see a bit of a struggle with so many new parts, but with Harry Hiestand coaching them, it may not feel like it.
