We have three questions about every player on the Notre Dame football roster this spring.

There will be about 65 guys on scholarship for spring football this year. We are going to take a look at each one (alphabetically for dewey decimal fans), and ask a few questions. What those questions will be, are probably more important than the answers actually given before September- if any are given at all.

CB. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. DEVIN BUTLER. SR. Devin Butler could have and should have been redshirted his freshman year, but instead he saw action in all but one game. Butler played the same role in his sophomore and junior season as a back-up. That was until KeiVarae Russell got hurt and Butler started against Stanford- and then broke his ankle in preparation for the Fiesta Bowl versus Ohio State.

1. What’s Devin Butler’s spring going to be like?

Well… I’m sure there will be a lot of rehab. As far as what is known, is that Butler will be unavailable for most if not all of spring ball. So, I imaging his spring will be even more stressful than most others. Think about it. Butler has paid his dues and is entering his senior year as basically a career back-up and role player. The starting cornerback from last year is gone and he was in line for the spot until he got injured. Now, he has to watch a few of the young bucks like Nick Watkins (who had a decent bowl game), Shawn Crawford (the starting nickel back as a true freshman in fall camp until he got injured), and Nick Coleman get their time and their snaps.

2. How’s that depth chart look again?

Pretty deep. When fall camp starts there will be 9 bodies available at cornerback. One of them is a sure starter in Cole Luke, while the rest are young bloods looking for that spot.

3. Why do we keep mentioning the bulging depth chart?

Next: Time For Asmar?

It was mentioned by more than a few people on more than a few occasions that perhaps Butler would be better suited to play safety or in some type of extra DB in packages. The brutal truth is that after 3 years of 2nd and 3rd stringing, coming off a major foot injury, and being up against a lot of numbers on the depth chart, there might be a better opportunity at safety for Butler than at corner. He has skills to play, but the exact spot is still unknown.
