Notre Dame Football: Will Fuller Should Provide Balance to the Houston Texans’ Offense
By Bobby Norell
On Thursday night the Houston Texans selected Will Fuller with the 21st overall pick. He should provide balance to the Texans offense.
When Will Fuller’s name was announced on Thursday night it marked the first time since 2012 that the Notre Dame football program produced two first round draft picks, as Ronnie Stanley was selected 6th overall by the Baltimore Ravens earlier in the draft.
The amazing thing about Fuller is that according to ESPN’s 2013 rankings, he was actually the lowest rated recruit in the class. He turned out to be the best offensive player and most productive player of the class. This really speaks to Brian Kelly’s ability to develop talent. He can develop the three-stars into first round picks.

Many draft experts had the Texans as a possible and likely destination for Fuller. They Texans already have one No.1 receiver in DeAndre Hopkins. Adding Fuller should take a lot of the pressure and attention off Hopkins as Houston will now have two big play threats. Fuller will help the Texans be a much more balanced attack on offense. Us Irish fans have been spoiled over the past two seasons with what Fuller has been able to do. He’s produced big play after big play, some coming in the biggest of situations.
Taking Fuller was quite the no brainer for Houston. They recently invested a ton of money in former Denver Broncos backup Brock Osweiler, so Houston feels like they are in a position to win immediately. By giving Osweiler two huge weapons in Fuller and Hopkins it should take the pressure off him as well. We saw Fuller act as somewhat of a security blanket for DeShone Kizer in 2015. Whenever the Irish needed a big play, it usually went to Fuller. Osweiler will have that option ,as well as Hopkins, in his first full season as starting quarterback.

The Texans were a playoff team in 2015, but were sent home early as they fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round. They had two glaring weaknesses as they headed into the offseason and that was quarterback and a receiver to play opposite of Hopkins. They have certainly filled both of those holes with Osweiler and Fuller. The Texans already have a great defense led by J.J. Watt, and now they should have a offense to go along with it. Fuller seems to be stepping in to an ideal situation. It would not be a surprise to see him making big plays on the way to a playoff appearance in 2016.
