Former Notre Dame guard Demetrius Jackson agrees to guaranteed contract with the Boston Celtics.

It was reported on Saturday by the Boston Globe that Demetrius Jackson has agreed to a guaranteed contract with the Celtics. Jackson was drafted in the 2nd round of last month’s NBA Draft and because of his second round status it meant that a contract and roster spot was not guaranteed to him. Now with this contract Jackson will be guaranteed a salary and a spot on Boston’s roster. The length and specifics of the deal are still unknown.

The news is somewhat surprising considering Jackson’s performance in the Summer League. Jackson only averaged 16.6 minutes, 5.2 points, 2.0 rebound and 1.2 assists. He did shoot a very respectable 45% from the three and 41% from the field. Apparently Jackson showed enough to warrant the Celtics to offer him a guaranteed contract. The Celtics had a plethora of draft picks in last month’s draft, so they seem intent on not letting any of those assets go.

Right now it looks pretty unclear on how much playing time Jackson will receive because Boston already has an all star in Isaiah Thomas and also Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley and Terry Rozier at the guard position. It would probably be a pretty safe assumption that Jackson will probably spend a good deal of time sitting in his rookie season, unless the Celtics use him as a trade piece and he gets sent elsewhere, where he can garner more playing time.

This can only help bolster the Notre Dame basketball name. In the last two seasons they have had three players sign guaranteed NBA contracts. Mike Brey is finally taking his teams deep into the tournament and sending kids to the NBA. That should play well on the recruiting trail.
