Sumner, Washington Linebacker Ben Wilson is hearing from the Irish.

Ben Wilson is one of the best football players the state of Washington has to offer.

After his outstanding junior season, he was named the 4A SPSL Defensive Player of the year, added to the All-American Honorable Mention list of Maxpreps as well as being tabbed an All-State linebacker in a talent-heavy Washington state class.

His stats from ’16 were staggering. He finished the season with a state-high 201 tackles,16 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and 2 interceptions, one taken back for a touchdowns.

He has offers from the following; Cal, UCLA, Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisville, Montana State, TCU, Vanderbilt and Washington State. I’m certain that many strong programs are evaluating him at this time and his offer list is bound to grow substantially.

I spoke with Wilson today and asked him what his contact has been from Notre Dame so far.

“I have been staying in touch with coach Polian. I think we are early in the process and getting to know one another better. I think I am still being evaluated. ND would be an amazing opportunity, should that happen,” said Wilson.

Wilson then elaborated on his offers. “I am thankful with the offers I have and have stayed in regular contact with TCU, Venderbilt, Louisville, Utah, Washington State and Cal,” he said. The Vanderbilt and Cal contact shows that he definitely a strong student.

Brian Polian has been doing a great job recruiting not only California kids, but Washington and Oregon as well. “Coach Polian contacted me about a month ago and we stay in touch about once a week. He has been great,” said Wilson.

Wilson finished by stating, “ND is an elite school with an amazing football program.”

The first thing that came to mind when I watched his film is that he reminds me of a young Greer Martini with more dynamic and natural pass coverage skills. In the second play of his hudl film, Wilson makes an athletic one-handed interception for a touchdown when he made a great read on a crossing route.

His athleticism is evident in many ways on film, including his play at running back. He shows great body control and a natural ability to evade tacklers. However, his talent is definitely put into use the most on the defensive side of the ball.

Wilson has been the starter for his prep program since his sophomore season. If you watch the first play of his junior season Hudl highlights, you’ll see why. The kid is a thumper.

He shows solid instincts and takes decisive angles to the football and has 4.6 speed to close quickly and efficiently. When he arrives at the ball, he shows the form and technique that college recruiters want to see. He’s impressive.

Wilson shows his toughness and ability to use his hands effectively by getting off blocks well. He can fight through traffic and proves to be a smart football player by the decisions he makes in his pursuit to the ball carrier.

Given Wilson’s size at 220 pounds and quick feet and instincts that relate to the pass game, I could see him possibly playing some strong safety or rover, depending on how he matures and develops.

Ben Wilson is definitely a kid to keep an eye on and is another great ’18 recruit from the state of Washington.
