Bru McCoy is a name you need to know.

Bru McCoy is among the most elite high school sophomore football players in the country. The dynamic two-way star from California prep powerhouse Mater Dei, already has 17 offers from schools like Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and USC.

I asked McCoy about his contact with the Irish football staff. “My contact with Notre Dame so far has been checking in here and there. I like to keep in touch with the coaches, call them every once in a while, just talk football,” he said.

“I plan on visiting when I get the chance. I’ve been up to Notre Dame twice already and both times I had an amazing experience so I’m looking forward to going back,” said McCoy.

Like all ’19 recruits, McCoy is in the very early stages of his recruitment. Given his talent and where he will be as an athlete by his senior year after putting in a few years of weight training, maturing and skill development in the Mater Dei program, his offer list will explode.

“I have no top schools and I plan on taking my time, looking at every school and finding the best fit for me, education wise and football wise. Going forward, I just want enjoy this, take it all in, get better as a student and a football player and just learn from those in front of me,” said McCoy.

At 6’3, 205 pounds, McCoy currently has ideal college level receiver size, and plays the position well. That said, many believe he projects best at defensive end.

“Playing both sides of the ball, for me, is a blessing. I love being on the field as much as possible and being able to always have an opportunity to make an impact on the game. With that in mind, I don’t have any side of the ball to prefer,” said McCoy.

Notre Dame is also after McCoy’s teammates Amon Ra St. Brown and J.T. Daniels. McCoy spoke about what it is like playing with arguably the best quarterback-receiver combo in the country.

“Playing with Amon Ra and J.T. is a blessing. They’re like me, two ultra competitors. Awesome teammates, and we all have one common goal which makes it all the better,” said McCoy.

There are strict Division 1 guidelines on contacting sophomore recruits and McCoy is learning that first hand.

“Given that I’m only a sophomore, my contact with schools recruiting me is minimal, but Notre Dame has always been involved with me as much as is allowed, as well as USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska and Ohio State,” explained McCoy.

“I could definitely see myself going to Notre Dame. It’s a great football school with a great history as well as equally great academics,” added Bru McCoy.

In ’16, McCoy caught 28 passes for 407 yards and 5 scores. Defensively, he was finding his game while going up against the best high school offensive lineman in California, week in and week out. He added 13 tackles, 6 sacks, 3 QB hurries and defended one pass.
